Ci sono luoghi che sembrano custodire un segreto. Non lo rivelano subito, lo proteggono come un dono raro, da svelare solo a chi sa cercare. Illegio, minuscolo borgo della Carnia, è uno di questi: 340 anime, una strada che finisce proprio lì, tra i profili delle Alpi friulane, un silenzio che sa di leggende antiche e di acqua che scorre tra i mulini.
Eppure, da ventun anni, proprio qui accade qualcosa che ha del miracoloso: un paese che diventa centro internazionale dell’arte, capace di ospitare capolavori che portano la firma di Caravaggio, Rembrandt, Picasso, Tiziano. Dal 2004 a oggi sono arrivati oltre 1.500 capolavori e quasi 700.000 visitatori hanno varcato questa soglia sospesa tra cielo e monti.
La nuova mostra: un viaggio nella “ricchezza”
Dal 6 giugno al 9 novembre 2025, Illegio invita a un nuovo incanto. Si intitola “Ricchezza. Dilemma perenne”, e già il titolo sembra promettere un percorso che va oltre lo sguardo, per toccare corde più intime. Cinquantadue opere guideranno lungo cinque secoli di storia, dal Quattrocento al Novecento, in una meditazione collettiva su cosa significhi davvero essere ricchi.
La lista dei nomi toglie il fiato: Caravaggio con il suo Ragazzo morso da un ramarro, metafora di desideri e pericoli; Rembrandt, maestro assoluto di luce e penombra; Brueghel il Giovane in un dipinto inedito, Pellizza da Volpedo, che anticipa la figura centrale del Quarto Stato; Picasso, in una rara opera mai vista; Guttuso, che dipinge la Sicilia nel suo contrasto tra splendore e miseria. Accanto a loro, Tiziano, Lotto, Bellini, Lippi, Preti. Un firmamento che non ti aspetteresti di incontrare in una valle appartata del Friuli.
L’intuizione di un parroco
Dietro questa avventura straordinaria c’è la visione di don Alessio Geretti, parroco e curatore, che ha trasformato un sogno in realtà. Ogni mostra non è mai solo esposizione: è racconto, meditazione, dialogo. Quest’anno la domanda è più urgente che mai: la ricchezza è promessa di emancipazione e progresso o pericolosa illusione che divide e consuma?
Il percorso non dà risposte facili, ma suggerisce immagini: la gioia della condivisione, le ferite delle disuguaglianze, la scelta paradossale della povertà come libertà interiore.
Un’esperienza che va oltre l’arte
Visitare Illegio significa immergersi in un intreccio raro: natura, cultura e spiritualità. La Pieve di San Floriano, con i suoi affreschi medievali, veglia sul borgo; il rio Touf scorre tra antichi mulini; le case raccontano ancora il ritmo contadino; i canti liturgici tramandano echi di un rito antico.
Qui ogni dettaglio sembra dire che l’arte non è altrove, ma parte di un tessuto di vita, di comunità, di bellezza condivisa.
Il segreto di Illegio è proprio questo: non basta leggerne, bisogna andarci. Bisogna percorrere la strada che sale da Tolmezzo, affrontare l’ultimo tornante e lasciarsi sorprendere dalla conca che si apre d’improvviso, con il borgo adagiato come una gemma tra i monti. Solo allora l’incontro con i capolavori diventa completo: la bellezza dell’arte si intreccia con quella del paesaggio, e il visitatore si scopre parte di un’esperienza che consola, interroga e rinnova lo sguardo.
In fondo, la vera ricchezza è forse questa: lasciarsi incantare.
Illegio, the miracle of art in the mountains of Carnia
There are places that seem to guard a secret. They don’t reveal it immediately; they protect it like a rare gift, to be discovered only by those who know how to look. Illegio, a tiny village in Carnia, is one of them: 340 souls, a road that ends right there among the profiles of the Friulian Alps, a silence filled with ancient legends and the sound of water flowing through the old mills.
And yet, for twenty-one years, something miraculous has been happening here: a village that has become an international center of art, capable of hosting masterpieces by Caravaggio, Rembrandt, Picasso, Tiziano. Since 2004, more than 1,500 works of art have arrived here, and nearly 700,000 visitors have crossed this threshold suspended between sky and mountains.
The new exhibition: a journey into “wealth”
From June 6 to November 9, 2025, Illegio opens the doors to a new enchantment. It is titled “Wealth. A Perennial Dilemma”, and even the title already suggests a journey that goes beyond the eye, to touch more intimate chords. Fifty-two works will guide visitors through five centuries of history, from the fifteenth to the twentieth century, in a collective meditation on what it truly means to be rich.
The list of names is breathtaking: Caravaggio with his Boy Bitten by a Lizard, a metaphor of desire and danger; Rembrandt, absolute master of light and shadow; Brueghel the Younger; Pellizza da Volpedo, who anticipated the central figure of The Fourth Estate; Picasso, with a rare, never-before-seen work; Guttuso, who painted Sicily in its contrast between splendor and poverty. Alongside them, Tiziano, Lotto, Bellini, Lippi, Preti. A constellation you would never expect to encounter in a secluded valley of Friuli.

Behind this extraordinary adventure lies the vision of don Alessio Geretti, parish priest and curator, who transformed a dream into reality. Each exhibition is never just a display: it is a story, a meditation, a dialogue. Visiting Illegio means immersing yourself in a rare intertwining of nature, culture, and spirituality. The Pieve of San Floriano, with its medieval frescoes, watches over the village; the Touf stream runs between ancient mills; the houses still speak of a rural rhythm; the liturgical chants echo the memory of an ancient rite.
Here, every detail seems to say that art is not elsewhere, but part of a fabric of life, community, and shared beauty.
The secret of Illegio is exactly this: it is not enough to read about it—you must go there. You must take the road that climbs from Tolmezzo, face the last bend, and let yourself be surprised by the basin that suddenly opens, with the village nestled like a gem among the mountains. Only then does the encounter with the masterpieces become complete: the beauty of art intertwines with that of the landscape, and the visitor becomes part of an experience that consoles, questions, and renews the gaze.
In the end, perhaps true wealth is just this: letting yourself be enchanted.
