Il Danieli è uno di quei nomi che, ovunque nel mondo, accendono un immaginario: marmi, specchi, storie d’amore, cinema, sogni che attraversano i secoli. Non è solo un hotel, ma un luogo che custodisce secoli di vita e di storie, affacciato sulla laguna come su un grande palcoscenico.
Prima ancora di essere un albergo, il Danieli è stato Palazzo Dandolo, residenza di una delle famiglie più influenti della Serenissima, che diede a Venezia quattro Dogi, tra cui il celebre Enrico Dandolo. Per cinquecento anni questo edificio neogotico è stato testimone silenzioso della vita politica e culturale della città, fino a quando, nel 1822, un imprenditore visionario, Giuseppe Dal Niel, decise di trasformarne alcune stanze in un hotel. I francesi iniziarono a chiamarlo “chez Dal Niel”, e da quell’espressione nacque il nome che ancora oggi risuona come un’icona: Danieli.
Da allora, la storia dell’hotel si è intrecciata a quella di Venezia, attraversando restauri, ampliamenti, nuovi palazzi collegati come capitoli di un unico romanzo. Dal restauro ottocentesco firmato da Tranquillo Orsi, fino all’ingresso nel gruppo CIGA Hotels voluto dal conte Giuseppe Volpi, e alla nascita del terzo edificio, il Palazzo Danieli Excelsior, nel secondo dopoguerra. Ogni epoca ha lasciato un segno, senza cancellare le precedenti.
Ma il Danieli non è stato solo teatro di grandi eventi storici – dalla prima bandiera degli Alleati sventolata in città nel 1945 alla nascita del Premio Campiello – bensì custode di passioni leggendarie. Qui George Sand visse un amore travolgente, qui D’Annunzio e Eleonora Duse si incontrarono nella suite Doge Dandolo, qui nacque la storia tra Maria Callas e Aristotele Onassis. E poi il cinema, da James Bond ad Angelina Jolie, che ha trasformato il Danieli in un set naturale, sospeso tra realtà e mito.
Oggi, dopo un lungo e meticoloso restauro, questo luogo simbolo della “Splendida Venezia” si prepara a una nuova vita con la riapertura come Danieli, A Four Seasons Hotel, Venice.
Un nuovo capitolo, senza perdere l’anima
Affacciato sulla Riva degli Schiavoni, a pochi passi da Piazza San Marco, il Danieli riunisce ancora i suoi tre palazzi storici, ma li rilegge con uno sguardo contemporaneo. Il progetto di reinterpretazione è firmato dal designer francese Pierre-Yves Rochon, che ha scelto di non stravolgere, ma di dialogare con la memoria del luogo: vetri e specchi, una palette che richiama i riflessi della laguna – blu profondi, verdi acquatici, rosa cipria e ori morbidi – e materiali che parlano veneziano, come i tessuti Rubelli, i pavimenti alla veneziana, i marmi italiani e il vetro di Murano.
Nel cuore del Palazzo Dandolo, l’atrio a quattro piani con colonne di marmo rosa e la scala dorata torna a essere un passaggio simbolico tra passato e presente. Non un museo immobile, ma uno spazio che respira, pronto ad accogliere nuove storie.
A guidare questa rinascita c’è Christian Zandonella, direttore generale con un percorso internazionale, che racconta il nuovo Danieli come un luogo di legami autentici con la città: collaborazioni con artigiani locali, attenzione alla vita quotidiana veneziana, esperienze che non si fermano alla cartolina.
Il Danieli aprirà con 120 camere e suite, molte delle quali affacciate sull’acqua, con vista diretta sulla laguna. Nei prossimi anni, l’offerta crescerà fino a 176 tra camere e suite, pensate anche per famiglie e gruppi che desiderano condividere il viaggio.
La dimensione “viaggio di gusto” trova espressione nella proposta gastronomica firmata dallo chef Adriano Rausa, al Ristorante Terrazza Danieli, sospeso tra cielo e acqua, con una vista che abbraccia cupole e isole. La cucina parte da ingredienti locali, dall’isola di Sant’Erasmo alla laguna, per raccontare Venezia attraverso i sapori, senza forzature.
Accanto, il Bar Dandolo e il bar della terrazza diventano luoghi di incontro, dal caffè del pomeriggio all’aperitivo al tramonto, quando la luce si dissolve lentamente sull’acqua.
La nuova gestione punta a far vivere Venezia in modo più profondo: dalla Voga Veneta con i maestri remèri, alla scoperta dei giardini segreti nascosti nei palazzi, fino alla comprensione del delicato equilibrio della laguna e delle sue barriere mobili. C’è spazio anche per incontri inaspettati, come una passeggiata con figure emblematiche della scena locale, capaci di raccontare una Venezia viva, lontana dagli stereotipi.
La riapertura, prevista nella tarda primavera del 2026 con la possibilità di prenotare dal 26 agosto, segna l’inizio di una nuova stagione per uno degli hotel più iconici al mondo. Nei prossimi mesi arriveranno anche la Danieli Spa e nuove suite, completando un progetto che guarda al futuro senza rinnegare il passato.
In una città che da secoli si reinventa senza smettere di essere se stessa, il Danieli torna a essere non solo un luogo dove dormire, ma un modo di entrare in relazione con Venezia.

Before becoming a hotel, the Danieli was Palazzo Dandolo, residence of one of the most powerful families of the Serenissima, which gave Venice four Doges, including the famous Enrico Dandolo. For five hundred years this neo-Gothic building silently witnessed the political and cultural life of the city, until, in 1822, a visionary entrepreneur, Giuseppe Dal Niel, decided to transform some of its rooms into a hotel. The French began calling it “chez Dal Niel”, and from that expression was born the name that still resonates today as an icon: Danieli.
From that moment on, the history of the hotel became inseparable from that of Venice, passing through restorations, expansions and new palaces connected like chapters of a single novel. From the 19th-century restoration by Tranquillo Orsi, to its entry into the CIGA Hotels group under Count Giuseppe Volpi, and finally the construction of the third building, Palazzo Danieli Excelsior, in the post-war period. Each era left its mark, without erasing the previous one.
Yet the Danieli has not only been the stage of major historical events — from the first Allied flag waved in the city in 1945 to the birth of the Premio Campiello — but also the guardian of legendary passions. Here George Sand lived a consuming love, here Gabriele D’Annunzio met Eleonora Duse in the Doge Dandolo Suite, and here began the love story between Maria Callas and Aristotle Onassis. Then came cinema, from James Bond to Angelina Jolie, turning the Danieli into a natural film set, suspended between reality and myth.
Today, after a long and meticulous restoration, this symbol of “Splendid Venice” is preparing for a new life with its reopening as Danieli, A Four Seasons Hotel, Venice.
A new chapter, without losing its soul
Overlooking the Riva degli Schiavoni, just steps from St. Mark’s Square, the Danieli still unites its three historic palaces, now reinterpreted through a contemporary lens. The redesign is signed by French designer Pierre-Yves Rochon, who chose not to overturn the past, but to converse with it: glass and mirrors, a palette inspired by the lagoon’s reflections — deep blues, watery greens, powder pinks and soft golds — and materials that speak the language of Venice, such as Rubelli fabrics, terrazzo floors, Italian marbles and Murano glass.
At the heart of Palazzo Dandolo, the four-storey atrium with its pink marble columns and golden staircase once again becomes a symbolic passage between past and present. Not an immobile museum, but a space that breathes, ready to welcome new stories.
Leading this rebirth is Christian Zandonella, General Manager with an international career, who describes the new Danieli as a place of authentic bonds with the city: collaborations with local artisans, attention to everyday Venetian life, experiences that go beyond the postcard image.
The Danieli will open with 120 rooms and suites, many overlooking the water with direct views of the lagoon. In the coming years, the offering will grow to 176 rooms and suites, designed also for families and groups wishing to share the journey.
The “journey of taste” takes shape in the culinary vision of Chef Adriano Rausa at the Terrazza Danieli Restaurant, suspended between sky and water, with a view embracing domes and islands. The cuisine starts from local ingredients, from the island of Sant’Erasmo to the lagoon, to tell Venice through flavour, without excess.
Alongside it, Bar Dandolo and the terrace bar become places of encounter, from afternoon coffee to sunset aperitifs, when the light slowly dissolves on the water.
The new management aims to let guests experience Venice more deeply: from learning Voga Veneta with master oarsmen, to discovering secret gardens hidden inside palaces, to understanding the fragile balance of the lagoon and its mobile barriers. There is also room for unexpected encounters, such as walks with emblematic figures of the local scene, able to reveal a living Venice, far from stereotypes.
The reopening, scheduled for late spring 2026, with bookings available from August 26, marks the beginning of a new season for one of the world’s most iconic hotels. In the coming months, the Danieli Spa and new suites will also open, completing a project that looks to the future without denying the past.
In a city that has reinvented itself for centuries without ever losing its essence, the Danieli once again becomes not just a place to sleep, but a way of entering into a relationship with Venice.
